Early Life

Prince Edward was born on March 10, 1964, at Buckingham Palace in London. He is the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

His birth was special because his father was there to see it. He was baptized in May 1964 at Windsor Castle.

Like his older siblings, Charles, Anne, and Andrew, Edward had a governess who took care of him and taught him at Buckingham Palace.

Later, he went to different schools, like Collingham College in Kensington and Heatherdown School in Berkshire. He also went to Gordonstoun School in Scotland, where he became the head boy in his last term.

In school, he did okay in English and history but got lower grades in politics.

After school, he spent time in New Zealand as a tutor. When he returned to the UK, he studied history at Jesus College, Cambridge.

Even though his grades weren’t great, he still got into the university. He graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Post University

After finishing school in 1986, Edward joined a group called the Royal Marines. They helped pay for his education at Cambridge University as long as he promised to work for them later on.

He had agreed to join the Royal Marines in September 1983. However, in January 1987, he left the special training he was doing with them.

He had finished about one-third of the training that was supposed to last a whole year. People in the media said that Prince Philip, who was in charge of the Royal Marines, was not happy about this.

But later, Prince Edward said that his father didn’t force him to quit. Some people said that Prince Philip understood his son’s choice better than other family members.

Buckingham Palace, the official home of the royal family, mentioned that Prince Edward thought a lot about his decision.

He felt sad about leaving, but he decided that he didn’t want to keep working in the military for a long time.

Personal Life

Edward first met Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1987 when he was dating her friend. They crossed paths again in 1993 during a charity event, the Prince Edward Summer Challenge, where they got closer and started their relationship.

In December 1993, amidst rumors about their marriage plans, Edward wrote a letter to the media denying such plans and requesting privacy.

In December 1998, while on vacation in the Bahamas, Edward proposed to Sophie, and their engagement became public on 6 January 1999.

The engagement ring he gave her was a valuable piece with a two-carat oval diamond and heart-shaped gemstones, set in white gold.

Their wedding occurred on June 19, 1999 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. Unlike his brothers’ grand weddings in significant places like Westminster Abbey, Edward’s wedding was more intimate.

On this day, he was also named Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn, symbolizing the Welsh heritage of Sophie’s family. This marked a change as typically, sons of the monarch were made royal dukes.

In 2001, Sophie experienced an ectopic pregnancy. Edward and Sophie have two children: Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, born prematurely on 8 November 2003, and James Mountbatten-Windsor, born on 17 December 2007.

Since 2023, Edward’s children are addressed as children of a duke instead of using titles like Prince or Princess and Royal Highness.

The family’s primary residence is Bagshot Park, and they have official spaces at Buckingham Palace.

Net Worth

His net worth is estimated to be around $1 billion.
